Baroque, The Rocks

I've wanted to go here for ages for a few reasons...one is their patisserie (La Rennaisance) is amazing and has the best raspberry mousse cake in existence. Another is that they are doing classic, simple french bistro fare which is always one of my favourite styles of food.

I remember reading a review in Time Out too which made it out to be great but only really gave it 3 stars out of 5 so I was curious.

The place itself is gorgeous...nice big outdoor seating area and inside it's all schmick polished concrete, ghost-ish pink chairs and a nice modern look. Lots of tables too so I would say there's a pretty decent chance of getting a table for lunch sans reservation.

To begin with there is limitless free bread from their bakery (free tastes better) with olive oil which is an odd call for a french bistro instead of butter but go with it. The specials board is full of promising sounding things (which I didn't go for this time round) such as whole ocean trout gribiche style sauce which looked amazing and seemed pretty popular judging by the surrounding tables ordering it!

We all shared a few entrees starting with the Charcuterie platter which is pictured above. It was good but nothing to write home about..2 pork based terrines and some pickled tongue (which they told me was beef cheek!tongue needs a warning...good rule of life) and few cornichons etc...

The next entree was fairly middle of the road too. Sauteed snails (my first snails..they tasted like mushrooms?) with citrus and lots of foam. Good description...the dish was a bit too creamy, not garlicky enough for snails my Ma the snail afficionado assured me me but nice enough.

The standout entree was the goats cheese cigar and beetroot salad for sure...I could eat it all day. Candied nuts and mystery dust and the whole dish was completely worth the way too cheap price they charged for it..

Main wise was when I realised holy shiz this place is amazing...simple steak frites. Stupidly I didn't get a decent photo but the beef was gorgeously moist, perfectly cooked which is no meat feat for meat served slice which usually dries out. It came with proper, handcut and double fried chips and a silky dijon sauce...A grade steak frites.

Dessert was also absolutely amazing...passionfruit souffle with passionfruit ice cream and an odd but welcome little banana milkshake shot. The souffle was absolute perfection.

The service was great, they do a monday through friday daily special including a thursday "nose to tail day". It is an absolute bargain too and the perfect place to grab a weekday lunch! If I was time out I would have given 4 stars fo' sure :)

Make sure you walk a block down the road and take home some tasty cakes from their patisserie too!
